The Swampscott Police Department and nonprofit Police2Peace are pleased to announce a special in-person training session for community members to learn about the Peace Officer Project and the Peace Officer Promise. This initiative supports a continued positive direction in public safety—one that focuses on building trust, increasing understanding, and creating a shared vision between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
This engaging training introduces the Peace Officer framework, a national model that emphasizes policing which is effective, empathetic, and just. Community participants will learn about the evolving challenges in policing, the cultural progression within agencies, and how local residents can be involved in co-producing public safety.
“This is more than a presentation—it’s a conversation with our community,” said Chief Ruben Quesada, Chief of Police for Swampscott. “We’re inviting residents to hear firsthand how we embody the mindset of servanthood to become Peace Officers in both word and action. We want our community to understand what that means, ask questions, and help shape the future of public safety in Swampscott.”
Unlike traditional law enforcement models, the Peace Officer approach focuses on reducing harm while protecting the public. Through the Peace Officer Promise, departments publicly commit to do everything in their power to protect the community without causing unintended harm—mirroring the intent behind the medical field’s Hippocratic Oath.
This training is open to all community members—civic leaders, faith-based organizations, educators, nonprofit partners, and concerned residents. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how they can support and participate in this shift toward safer, more collaborative policing.
In addition to the training, the Swampscott Police Department is launching a Community Survey to gather feedback from residents about public safety in general and perceptions of the Swampscott Police Department specifically. The survey is open through June 30, and all community members are encouraged to participate.
